Birks and Telefilm Canada hosted the third-annual Birks Diamond Tribute to the Year’s Women in Film at the Shangri-La Hotel Toronto, on September 15, 2015 to celebrate nine of Canada’s brightest and revered female actors and film directors. The honoured women include: directors Sophie Deraspe, Anne Émond, Patricia Rozema, Kari Skogland, and Ingrid Veninger; as well as actors Katie Boland, Suzanne Clément, Catherine O’Hara, and Karine Vanasse. The posh soiree brought together a diverse group of more than 400 notable guests from Canada’s film, fashion and cultural communities.

Birks and Telefilm Canada welcomed notable attendees from the worlds of film, fashion, and culture to Tuesday’s event. Guests included Women in Film jury members Noreen Flanagan (Editor in Chief, ELLE Canada) and Bernadette Morra (Editor in Chief, FASHION Magazine), TIFF’s artistic director Cameron Bailey, Greta Constantine designer Kirk Pickersgill (who dressed Karine Vanasse), director Deepa Mehta, actor Lauren Holly, OCAD President Sara Diamond, and Suzanne Boyd (Editor in Chief, ZOOMER).
Honoured director Ingrid Veninger and honoured actor Karine Vanasse were adorned in new Birks pieces as they graced the stage to receive their tributes. Veninger wore pieces from the Birks Muse Ribbon collection – the newly launched 18-karat yellow gold signature collection that was also on display for guests to view and try on. Eva Hartling from Birks Group Inc. and Carolle Brabant from Telefilm Canada presented all honourees with gifts from Birks to celebrate their achievements in film this year. Stylish guests including Stacey McKenzie, Jenna Bitove, Catriona Smart, and Ainsley Kerr wore pieces from new Birks collections including Muse Ribbon, Snowflake, and Bee Chic.
Collaboration between Telefilm and Birks
This is the fifth event organized by Telefilm and Birks to honour Canadian women directors and actors. In 2012, they paid tribute to Canadian women in film at the Toronto International Film Festival in an event held at the Shangri-La Hotel, Toronto. Also in 2012, the Birks Canadian Diamond was awarded at Telefilm’s Tribute to Canadian Talent event at the Cannes Film Festival. And in 2013, the inaugural Birks Diamond Tribute to the Year’s Women in Film was launched at the Toronto International Film Festival. This year is the third edition of the Birks Diamond Tribute.
