SNAP® Chosen as Inaugural Partner for the Pecaut Centre for Social Impact

SNAP® (Stop Now And Plan) has been chosen as the inaugural investee for The Pecaut Centre for Social Impact after a comprehensive selection process. The Pecaut Centre will infuse business expertise and help build capacity to support the sustainable growth of Canada’s most effective evidence-based mental health program for children under 12. The ultimate goal: make SNAP® available to children and families across Canada.

SNAP® is an evidence-based, family-focused model that teaches children with behavioural concerns, and their parents, effective emotion regulation, self-control, and problem-solving skills. Developed at Child Development Institute (CDI), an accredited children’s mental health agency in Toronto, SNAP® programs are gender sensitive and oriented around simple to learn techniques. Scientifically tested and meticulously refined over the past 29 years, SNAP® helps children to think before they act.

“We are thrilled to have been selected by The Pecaut Centre and look forward to using the innovative SNAP® model to drive social change in Canada,” says Dr. Leena Augimeri, Director of Scientific and Program Development at Child Development Institute. “Partnering with the incredibly talented strategists at The Pecaut Centre for Social Impact will allow SNAP® to reach even more at-risk children and their families across Canada, building lifelong skills at an early age.”

THE FORGOTTEN AGES

SNAP® programs address an age group that is often overlooked in the treatment of mental health. By providing high risk children under 12 with the tools they need to improve their behaviour early on, SNAP® has the potential to reduce the number of children who may become juvenile offenders. Ultimately, the program strives to keep children and youth in school and out of trouble.

The effective and personalized approach of SNAP® has received the highest effectiveness ratings for evidence-based programs by national and international bodies. SNAP® was also awarded the inuagural Prime Minister’s Volunteer Award for Social Innovation in 2012. With demonstrated success reducing disruptive behaviours, SNAP® strives to expand the reach of its programs across Canada to address the high percentage of children who are not currently receiving the treatment they require.

“I am 22 and even today, I still use SNAP®. Without it, I would not have become the person that I am,” says a SNAP® participant. “At the rate I was going, everyone that knew me said I would be in jail and would drop out of high school. I am very happy to say, with the help of SNAP® and hard work, I have proven them wrong.”

A SYMBIOTIC PARTNERSHIP

The Pecaut Centre for Social Impact was founded to capture the spirit of the late David Pecaut, a civic entrepreneur who launched Career Edge and co-founded the Luminato Festival. The Centre convenes the talent, capital, and knowledge of private sector leaders who are dedicated to social change, cultivating Canada’s next generation of social innovators.

Identifying SNAP® as a model with exceptional potential for social impact, the Centre combines the strengths of their staff and partners, and advisors to help SNAP® reach its full potential and grow across Canada.

The exciting decision for the Pecaut Centre to channel their resources into the effective development of SNAP® impact has completely inverted the traditional charitable investment model. By devoting a wealth of knowledge and mentorship, the partnership will allow SNAP® to address the chronic treatment gap in children’s mental health in Ontario and across Canada.
