Luminato Festival

Nature Versus Industry as Luminato Festival’s Big Bang Bash Transforms Toronto’s Hearn Generating Station

On June 18 Luminato Festival presents the Big Bang Bash, its annual fundraising gala that kicks off this year’s multi-arts festival at the stunning, decommissioned Hearn Generating Station. With a theme that juxtaposes nature versus industry, the unique space will be transformed from a lush Pan American forest to a barren post-apocalyptic wasteland over the course of the evening.

The Big Bang Bash gala brings together Luminato artists, philanthropists, and special guests from Toronto’s artistic community for a seated dinner followed by a not-to-be-missed Opening Party celebrating the Festival’s 10 days of art, ideas and creativity. For the first time, tickets to the Opening Party will be on sale to the public with 500 tickets available at $175 each.

“The Hearn is one of Toronto’s most incredible spaces. We put it on the map last year and this year we are going further and deeper. The Hearn is a raw canvas, full of possibilities and ready to be filled with art and life. The theme for the event is inspired by the battle between nature and industry – we want to inspire guests to think about both directions this battle can go,” said Jorn Weisbrodt, Artistic Director, Luminato Festival. “And after the gala, we’ll take it one step further bringing a new, throbbing music energy with the Unsound Festival on June 19 and 20 in the first-ever public event held at the Hearn.”

Highlighted guests from previous years include featured Luminato Festival artists Isabella Rossellini, Marina Abramovic, Atom Egoyan, Willem Dafoe, and Rufus Wainwright. Gala co-chairs Tony and Lina Gagliano and David and Angela Feldman invite guests to experience the breathtaking venue while exploring the elements of surprise and discovery at the heart of Luminato Festival.

Gala and party guests will also be the first to experience Tim Hecker’s Ephemera, the world premiere of a live version of the Unsound Festival produced project. Bringing together scent and sound in a startling new way, Ephemera presents olfactory compositions by conceptual perfumer Geza Schoen based on the musical resonances and reverberations of Hecker, alongside immersive lighting design by Berlin’s MFO. Let the physical presence of scent and sound trigger emotions, uncover memories and move your other senses.

  • 6:30 PM: Big Bang Bash – Red Carpet Arrivals and Cocktail Reception
  • 7:30 PM: Dinner
  • 9:30 PM: Luminato Festival Opening Party
  • 10:30 PM: live world premiere of Tim Hecker’s Ephemera
