Also called the Spring Festival, Lunar New Year is the most important holiday of the traditional Chinese calendar and a time for family reunions and celebrations. The festival lasts for 15 days from the first to the 15th of the first lunar month in the Chinese lunar calendar, a 12-year repeating cycle of the Chinese zodiac, with each year named after an animal. 2016 marks the Year of the Monkey, and Lunar New Year (the 15th day of the cycle) falls on February 8.
Bursting with energy and color, Arts Brookfield and NYCCC’s Year of the Monkey Celebration highlights Chinese folk dancers in traditional makeup and garb, live music, martial arts demonstrations, drum performances, and a visit from the Monkey King himself. The full lineup will include artists from across the U.S. and China. Michelle Yu of Sportsnet New York will act as Master of ceremonies for the event.
The Year of the Monkey Celebration is one of hundreds of free arts and cultural programs that Arts Brookfield presents annually at Brookfield’s premier properties throughout New York City and across the globe. Arts Brookfield has a history of presenting Lunar New Year events at Brookfield Place, with its first celebration in 2004.
"We are delighted that our immensely popular Lunar New Year Celebration returns to the Winter Garden stage this year,” said Debra Simon, vice president and artistic director of Arts Brookfield. “The New York Chinese Cultural Center brings such a rich, colorful and exciting performance to Brookfield Place, the dynamic, innovative, cultural hub of Downtown Manhattan."
"New York Chinese Cultural Center is thrilled to be bringing Lunar New Year back to the Winter Garden at Brookfield Place for this special year: the Year of the Monkey, and to be bringing the Monkey King for such a fitting event,” said Geoffery Sant, president of the board of directors, NYCCC. “All of our performers, Dance China New York company members, as well as our School of the Arts students, are so proud to be taking part in this special celebration, and to show all audiences how beautiful, stunning and entertaining the Chinese culture is.”
