NEW YORK, NY — This summer, Arts Brookfield, the arts and cultural arm of real estate corporation Brookfield, is bringing the acclaimed interactive music installation The Swings: An exercise in Musical Collaboration by Daily tous les jours to the Hudson River waterfront in Lower Manhattan. Inviting a collaboration between participants to produce music, the 10-swing instrument will be featured at the picturesque Waterfront Plaza at Brookfield Place from Friday, June 10 to Thursday, July 7, 2016, free for the public to enjoy. The international tour of The Swings was made possible with generous support from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ).
A giant collective musical instrument that brings together people of all ages and backgrounds, each swing represents one of four instruments (piano, harp, guitar, vibraphone) and triggers sound when participants swing back and forth. As certain melodies emerge through cooperation between players, The Swings fosters a sense of community and ownership of public space.
“Arts Brookfield has a long history of presenting participatory installations that uniquely animate our public spaces. The Swings invigorates and inspires people to connect with each other though art,” said Debra Simon, vice president and artistic director of Arts Brookfield. “We look forward to this engaging art and music experience coming alive at Brookfield Place this summer, and hearing the range of melodies that visitors will produce.”
“The Waterfront Plaza at Brookfield Place is the perfect venue for The Swings,” said Mouna Andraos, co-founder Daily tous les jours. “It’s really about inspiring community and making the best use of public spaces, and to that end we could not have asked for a better partner than Arts Brookfield.”
Created by Daily tous les jours, a Montreal-based design studio with a focus on participation and collective experiences, the original 21 Swings new media art installation has attracted millions to the Quartier des spectacles area in Montreal, where each swing is swung an average of 8,500 times daily. A proven track record for encouraging collaborations and sparking conversation between strangers, The Swings bring vibrancy to an empty space by encouraging people of all ages and backgrounds to gather and experiment.
The Swings is one of the many installations and events being presented by Arts Brookfield this summer, including Satie at 150, Dance Heginbotham, the Lowdown Hudson Music Fest and Rooftop Films.
